STEPHEN SPENDER

Well, what I abhorred, were the great claims
Of inhuman superhuman aims

Attaching many to their gains
And making men links in their chains.

The wars, the public cause, false knowledge
Exalting material privilege,

And, in faith’s name, the lying creed
Denying the single human need

Of knowing that we nothing know
Of whence we come and where we go,

And nothing have, unless we can
Comfort the animal of man.
